After a tumultuous legal battle, rapper A$AP Rocky returned to the United States earlier this month after spending a brief period of time in jail in Sweden. His legal situation attracted a number of high-profile supporters, including Kim Kardashian West, Justin Bieber and Donald Trump. Trump’s actions included posting a number of tweets on the situation and sending a hostage negotiator to Sweden, leading to diplomatic turmoil.
With A$AP Rocky back home, a bizarre postscript to the whole situation has arisen. Trump, it seems, is hoping for a personal thank-you from Rocky. Rocky, according to a report from Vice, has stopped returning the president’s texts.
“Hours after Rocky got out of jail, the White House was expecting a public thank you from the rapper, or some sort of acknowledgment that Trump had lent a hand in his release,” Alex Lubbin writes. “That was reportedly the only condition of the White House’s involvement.”
And Rocky’s team had promised to thank Trump’s people. “If a serial killer gets Rocky out of jail, I would have no problem saying thank you to the serial killer,” Rocky’s manager reportedly told Trump’s surrogates.
Given that A$AP Rocky’s case went through the normal channels of the Swedish judicial system, perhaps he feels that Trump’s efforts didn’t actually change anything for him. Perhaps he’s worried about the political implications of such an endorsement. Or it could be that he’s noted that Trump’s support for his case might have more to do with immigration policy than anything else.
Whatever the cause, one head of state is still waiting for a text message back from a prominent musician. He might be waiting for a very long time.
