I’ve waited nine years to write a 10-year anniversary article hailing Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” as the best pop song of our time. That article may never be written, however, because the singer’s co-star in the iconic track’s video has cast some troubling light on the song in a series of Instagram posts accusing the pop star of sexual misconduct.
Model and actor Josh Kloss, who played Perry’s boyfriend in the “Teenage Dream” music video in 2010, took to Instagram on Monday to share his experience, accusing the singer of pulling down his sweatpants and exposing him to friends and onlookers in public.
“I saw Katy a couple times after her break up with Russel [sic],” he wrote in the post. “This one time I brought a friend who was dying to meet her. It was Johnny Wujek’s birthday party at moonlight roller way. And when I saw her, we hugged and she was still my crush. But as I turned to introduce my friend, [Katy] pulled my Adidas sweats and underwear out as far as she could to show a couple of her guy friends and the crowd around us my penis. Can you imagine how pathetic and embarrassed I felt?”
Kloss added that he was pressured into silence by Perry’s reps, who he said “lorded over” him and edited his interviews. “I was supposed to minimize myself and stay PC to protect her ‘image,’” Kloss wrote in a follow up post. The model wrote that he had initially planned to mark the anniversary by playing and posting a ukulele rendition of “Teenage Dream,” before deciding to speak out. “I’m not helping her bs image another second,” he wrote.
Kloss said he decided to speak about the incident in order to make a point about gender and sexual assault. “I just say this now because our culture is set on proving men of power are perverse,” he wrote. “But females with power are just as disgusting.”
This isn’t Perry’s first brush with sexual misconduct allegations. Back in 2018, Perry sparked controversy for kissing a 19-year-old American Idol contestant on camera without his consent.
“You hear over and over a million times that Males are the great evil on this planet,” Kloss wrote. “POWER empowers what is corrupt in people, regardless of their gender.”
