More than four decades after releasing his epic The Last Waltz concert documentary about Bob Dylan’s original backing group The Band, Martin Scorsese is back with another Dylan-related project that looks like it has the potential to be just as good.
Ordered up by Netflix, Scorsese’s new Dylan documentary, Rolling Thunder Revue, attempts to capture “the troubled spirit of America in 1975” and uses the the famed folk singer’s music as a backdrop.
Featuring interviews with Joan Baez, Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, Sam Shepard, Allen Ginsberg and Dylan speaking on camera for the first time in over a decade, the film is said to be “part documentary, part concert film, part fever dream.”
Scorsese previously delivered a documentary about Dylan with No Direction Home, a chronicle of Dylan’s life between his arrival in New York in January 1961 and his “retirement” from after his motorcycle accident in 1966.
Officially titled Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese, the film will be released on Netflix and select theaters on June 12. Here’s the trailer:
If you’re looking for a little teaser, you can go on YouTube and check out the September, 1976 NBC special Hard Rain, a concert film that shows Dylan and his band playing in Colorado. Although since this is Marty and it’s also 2019, we’re guessing the quality of the Rolling Thunder Revue doc will be much higher.
