ABC just announced it is planning a 90-minute live special that will reboot two of the iconic ’70s sitcoms of Norman Lear—and the casting looks dynamite. The special, which is being executive produced by Lear, Will Ferrell, and ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, will be a one-time-only event. No series are planned.
For its All in the Family remake, the network has signed Woody Harrelson to star as the notoriously bigoted Archie Bunker, Oscar winner Marisa Tomei will play his put-upon wife, Edith, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt‘s Ellie Kemper will take on the role of the Bunker’s ditzy but opinionated daughter, Gloria.
The 2019 cast of The Jeffersons is equally on point. Actor-comedian Jamie Foxx has been tapped to play the wise-cracking George Jefferson, stand-up comedian and veteran sitcom actress Wanda Sykes will star as his no-nonsense wife, Louise, and Justina Machado, of the recent remake of Lear’s One Day at a Time, will take the role of their garrulous maid, Florence. Ferrell is also scheduled to appear as the Jefferson’s slightly buffoonish white neighbor, Tom Willis.
Long-time TV veteran James Brooks has signed on to direct and Kimmel will host the live special on ABC on May 22, 2019.
