A group of about 60 women have come together on Facebook to take part in a #BirthStrike. The reason? Climate change.
“It had only been a couple of years that I’d felt the desire to have kids because I’d met my partner, whom I’m deeply in love with,” Blythe Pepino, the creator of the group says. “I got to that point in my life where a lot of my friends were having kids and it suddenly seemed like a beautiful idea to me. And that happened to coexist with my becoming much more aware of the climate challenge.”
According to Fast Company, a recent survey found that 38% of people between the age of 18 to 29-years-old say a couple should consider climate change risks when deciding to have children.
Some in the group want to make sure they’re not bringing a child into a world of suffering. Pepino believes that some people just don’t understand the risks of climate change.
Pepino doesn’t have faith in the world’s ability to reverse course on global warming, “but that doesn’t stop me from trying to make it happen,” she told Fast Company.
