Proof that good style endures: this one-off concept car only looks like it was pulled off the Fury Road set — it’s actually the Maserati Boomerang, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro in 1971 and sold at auction through Bonhams a couple days ago for $3.7 million.
Giorgetto Giugiaro is a legend in automotive circles, the Car Designer of the Century (according to the Global Automotive Elections Foundation) and the man behind the Maserati Ghibli as well as concepts for Alfa Romeo, BMW, Lamborghini and more. Also on his docket: cameras for Nikon, a Ducati motorcycle and a Beretta submachine gun.
It’s a diverse portfolio, and for other designers, the Boomerang would be the pinnacle of a career. It’s an oddball of a sports car, with a super-raked windscreen and a steering wheel that incorporates the gauges and switchgear. Our favorite part: the glasshouse cabin, with doors that sport more glass than metal.
Though the car debuted as a display model at the 1971 Turin auto show, it’s now fully street legal — at least in France, where its previous owner resides.
Whoever bought it at last week’s auction at the Chateau de Chantilly, all we can say is: enjoy it for now — but please put it back up for auction. Just give us a couple years. Five, tops. We’ll be ready, cash in hand.
