Here’s your plan.
Dinner
We’re starting at The York tonight. These guys were the early movers on York Boulevard, a street that’s totally walkable and packed with bars and record shops and modish furniture stores. The York still has one of the best burgers in town: a thick patty grilled to perfection, encased in white cheddar, laced with a tangy sauce and topped with arugula. The bar is big and central, with hightops to the right of the bar and banquettes to the left. Order at the bar and head to a banquette.
Donuts
The Donut Friend is about a block and a half away and worth extra steps past your final destination (see below). These funky bakers do custom donuts, donut sandwiches and all manner of holed pastry that your sweet tooth can fathom. They’re as soft and sweet as a freshly baked Krispy Kreme, and 100 times more inventive. The Nutella-stuffed one will give you religion.
Drinks and Games
After you get that sugar rush, walk a half block back to the newly opened Block Party, a sweet locals-only spot opened by Gracias Madre mixologist Jason Eisner. They’re not serving cocktails yet, just a choice selection of beer, including a housemade michelada with heirloom strawberry and lime paleta, and wine, like a glass of Summer Water Rosé.
The bar in the front is cocaine-white with a bright pink neon sign to let you know you’ve arrived. Pretty birds line the bar, which is where you should place an order. After you get your drinks head to the back for the 40 foot shuffleboard. Or play the Wii Sports, projected onto the wall.
