Any surfer will tell you:

There’s no substitute for the ocean.

The closest anyone’s going to get, though, is heading to The Independent on Divisadero this Saturday night for a special screening of Akasha hosted by Aqua Surf Shop.

Tickets here.

Director Andrew Kidman isn’t a maker of sun-soaked travelogues, but rather a kind of wave-meets-body guru: capable of translating not just the spectacle of surfing to the screen, but also its underlying philosophies.

But if Saturday doesn’t work for you? Try these four other surf-inspired artworks:

High Tide by Sougwen Chung
Simply put: the most beautiful rendering of a wave we’ve ever seen. Check it out at DSPTCH, where the original is currently on display, and buy a print here.

Resurface
A documentary showcasing the life-saving benefits of surf therapy for veterans with funding currently underway and well worth our support on Kickstarter.

Dora and Rohloff
A four-color silkscreen of iconic surfer Miki Dora from a recent show at Mollusk Surf Shop in Outer Sunset, this was reproduced from a 16mm Grant Rohloff work and made available in a limited edition of 100.

CJ Nelson: Foot Dangle
Thomas Campbell makes surf-related photos that are at once nostalgic and super modern — this is part of an exhibit celebrating his book, Seeing Fatima’s Eyes, about surfing in Morocco.

Surf’s up.
