Nestled into the lush Nicoya Peninsula, Playa Barrigona is a jungle hideaway stocked with luxury amenities, a private helipad among them. The remote property rests on a hilltop that overlooks the Pacific Ocean, providing its residents supreme privacy and relaxation.
Comprised of three separate villas that contain 12 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms in total, the compound sits on 403 acres of dense jungle spilling out onto the Costa Rican coastline. Each villa boasts vaulted ceilings, a full kitchen, and multiple verandas for treetop and ocean views. In addition, every home has its own pool and barbecue. The villas were constructed with local wood, accented with Spanish and Italian tiles.
Casa Guanacaste, the largest villa of the three, has seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms. The two other homes both have two bedrooms, but each have their own unique additions as well. Casa Barrigona boasts a poolside cottage, while Casa Dorada has its own loft.
The Guanacaste region, where the prestigious peninsula is located, is known for its untouched tropical splendor. From the white sandy beaches to the diverse wildlife, there’s plenty to do and see in this part of Costa Rica. Nearby villages Samara and Nosara provide a quaint place to shop or eat. Separating the compound from the rest of the region, Playa Barrigona is a nesting ground for olive ridley sea turles, which travel thousands of miles each year to lay their eggs.
The tropical compound was purchased by actor Mel Gibson in 2007. After putting the property on the market in 2011 and 2012, Gibson listed it a third time in 2014 and it’s been available since.
