When it comes to robots, not everyone thinks drones are the future. In fact, not everyone thinks flight is the future. Case in point is Agility Robotics’ latest design, which was inspired by ostrich physiology.
Named “Cassie,” this bipedal robot is Agility’s response to previous walking robot tests where prototypes fell over all the time, or moved clumsily on anything that wasn’t flat terrain. Cassie’s leggy design is a big step forward (pun intended), and Agility plans to send Cassie prototypes to as many academic and corporate research entities as possible, to help with development (Cassie still needs arms and a torso) and test the waters for future commercial opportunities.
Agility is confident that Cassie could be used for delivery services, search-and-rescue missions, and other situations that would confound commercial drones (navigating walk-up apartments and other old urban infrastructures, for example).
Check out this video showing off what the Cassie prototype can do so far.
