No trip to Africa is complete without a safari. Whether its giraffes in South Africa, water buffalo in Botswana, or antelope in Zambia, the continent is home to some of the world’s most stunning creatures.

Catching a glimpse of nature in the wild, however, shouldn’t require sacrificing comfort when there’s a bevy of opulent accommodations that cater to a sophisticated crowd. Here’s a few suggestions:

Karkloof Safari Spa

De-stress within feet of free-roaming giraffes at a spa nestled among 3,500 hectares of game reserve. Karkloof Safari Spa—offering treatments like massages, wraps, scrubs, and hydrotherapy—gives visitors a chance to boost their well-being while taking in the wildlife. On top of spotting zebra and rhinos on safari with a private guide, guests can explore the surrounding area on guided hikes and mountain biking treks. For advice, guidance, and booking click here (or call 0203 397 8891).

Botswana Safari in Style

Available only to small groups or individual guests, luxe travel outfitter Abercrombie & Kent has offered this trip for more than 50 years—a tenure like that ensures guests have the most authentic experience. While staying in newly renovated boutique-style camps and lodges, guests can explore the Okavango Delta in a dugout canoe, get a guided tour of the thundering Victoria Falls (from both Zambia and Zimbabwe), receive personal training on photographing the “Big Five” in Chobe National Park from a pro, and take a relaxing sunset cruise along the Zambezi River. More info here.

King Lewanika Lodge

A brand new luxury lodge in Zambia’s remote Liuwa Plain National Park will open in April, just at the flooded plains begin to dry up and herbivores graze in droves. The park boasts the second largest wildebeest migration in Africa, but is also home to a large population of cheetahs, hyenas, lions, antelope, and birds (330 different species). The elegant villa will be capped at a maximum of fifteen guests, promising the most intimate experience. For booking or further information, click here or call 01980 849160

andBeyond Matetsi River Lodge

Not too long ago, poachers had reduced this area to a barren stretch of brush. But the 123,500 acres of private game reserve called Matetsi is now a thriving home for a varied mix of wildlife—particularly known for the herds of elephants and rare sable antelope that migrate through the park. Guests can take in the animals in while enjoying sophisticated African fare along the riverfront or soak up the stars while sipping on sundowner cocktails. In addition, the lodge features an open-air massage parlor, full gym, and an extensive wine cellar. By booking through National Geographic Lodges, guests receive an exclusive breakfast with the reserve’s manager before they’ll receive a private tour of the park. Learn more here.
