An architecture firm based in Lower Manhattan is providing a whole new look to some of New York’s iconic landmarks. Hollwich Kushner has a new project called “New(er) York” which is applying contemporary construction and design methodologies to classic New York art deco buildings.
Their goal is to design buildings that are not just beautiful, but, “imbued with a unique personality.” According to their website and a press release sent to RealClearLife, Hollwich Kushner believes that character has longevity. They want to showcase the history of New York while also allowing it to inform new construction.
But in order to do this, they had to ask themselves some questions: What is the essence of New York? Why is the most renowned New York architecture from before World War II? What has contemporary design lost along the way? To begin, they selected twelve “timeless art deco landmarks” that represented New York.
The firm then studied the landmarks, analyzed proportions, reinterpreted massing, and rethought the façades.
According to the firm and Designboom, this project reimagines some of New York’s most famous buildings, such as the One Wall Street building and the Eldorado. However, Hollwich Kushner says that there is an “endless amount of inspiration” they can take from cities around the world.
