Were you one of the 143 million US consumers affected by Equifax’s security breach? You can now sue Equifax for negligence in small claims court using the DoNotPay bot, reports The Verge, and demand maximum damages. The payout for maximum damages ranges between $2,500 and $25,000 based on what state you live in.
The DoNotPay bot was launched in all 50 states in June, writes The Verge. Founder Joshua Browder, who was personally affected by the breach, told The Verge that he hopes his product will replace lawyers, and “with enough success, bankrupt Equifax.”
Currently, the bot helps you fill out the forms, but you still need to serve them yourself. And unfortunately, the bot cannot argue your case for your in court. The Verge writes that small claims court differ from state to state, and since nearly half of the U.S. population was affected by this breach (44 percent), each person will have different rules to follow.
However, ultimately, the bot can help speed up the process and “takes out the guesswork” of small claims court procedures, writes The Verge.
The Verge says that Equifax is most likely going to fight back, so any help, even from chatbots, probably can’t hurt.
