Morgan Freeman has his next role all lined up. He will play playing former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell in the biopic Powell, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Reginald Hudlin, the director of the biopic Marshall, about Thurgood Marshall, will direct this biopic as well. The movie will be produced by Amritraj and Lori McCreary, Freeman’s parter at Revelations Entertainment.
The biopic is set during Powell’s tenure as Secretary of State while George W. Bush is president, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The script was written by Ed Whitworth and was on the 2011 Black List.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Powell was a respected Army general before becoming the first African-American Secretary of State. He initially opposed the United States’ invasion of Iraq because he did not believe Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. However, he eventually changed his mind and made an infamous case for war to the United Nations Council, writes THR. Powell has described the event as a low point in his career because the evidence he used was later discredited.

Hyde Park’s Priya Amritraj and Addison Mehr are executive producers on the film, along with Freeman and Revelation’s Kelly Mendelsohn, according to THR.
Freeman recently starred in Going in Style and will also appear in Disney’s upcoming movie The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.
