Bill Belichick made a joke about being thankful there wasn’t an earthquake when the Patriots were in Mexico City. According to Sports Illustrated, it did not go over well with Mexicans.
“Players did a great job dealing with all the challenges that we had to deal with,” Belichick said on WEEI’s Dale and Keith with Holley radio show Monday afternoon, according to SI. “I think we’re fortunate there was no volcano eruptions, earthquakes or anything else while we were down there. I mean you have two NFL franchises in an area that I don’t know how stable the geological plates that were below us [were], but nothing happened so that was good.”
The audio makes it clear the Belichick was concerned about the Patriots and the Raiders getting caught in a dangerous earthquake, writes SI.
More than 200 people were killed two months ago in Mexico City. Earthquakes are fairly common in the city, but this is also true for many cities that house NFL teams. Many were quick to point this out.
“Outrageous ignorance of a ‘genius’ in the NFL,” ESPN Mexico‘s Poncho Vera wrote on Twitter.
Other Twitter users asked if they should be grateful not to be killed during a mass shooting when they visit the U.S.
