The official trailer for Mary Magdalene has dropped, featuring Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix. The film, written by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett, tries to give viewers a better idea of who Mary Magdalene, one of the most “enigmatic figures in Bible tales,” is, according to Empire Online.
Mary (Mara) is a young woman who is struggling with the oppressive hierarchies in her life. She finds a new path when she begins following Jesus (Phoenix). The two bond, despite the fact that the other disciples are not pleased with her presence.
The film has faced criticism over whitewashing, and as of now, the film is still backed by the Weinstein Company, but Universal Pictures if taking care of international distribution, reports Collider. They have also begun their own marketing campaign.
