New York City real estate records may be rewritten again, thanks to the celebrities and billionaires buying into the latest, ultra-luxury tower being built adjacent to Central Park. The new, 1,000-foot spire, being completed at 220 Central Park South, is expected to break the $13,000 per square foot mark set in 2012 at nearby 15 Central Park West.
To build the elite cachet of the new luxury apartments, the developer has taken the rare strategy of not releasing photos of the interiors of the units. Likewise, its chief executive has refused to publicly discuss the building, which is comprised of two parts: a smaller, 18-story “chalet” closer to the street and a 79-story tower set behind it.
But despite all the secrecy, a few bold-face names of 220 Central Park South’s future occupants have leaked out. Och-Ziff Capital Management chairman and billionaire Daniel Och has bought into the building as has hedge fund manager Ken Griffin, the latter having spent roughly $200 million on several units. And singer Sting and his wife Trudie Styler are also buyers into 220 Central Park South—the couple reportedly sold a unit in 15 Central Park West earlier this year for close to $50 million.
