In 2001, novelist Michael Peterson called the police, saying that his wife had had an accident and was dead after falling down the stairs in their home. A Peabody Award-winning series, The Staircase, followed the subsequent murder trial, with French director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade taking viewers through the unbelievable twists and turns of the case in an eight-episode documentary. The trial ultimately led to Peterson’s conviction, but the story didn’t end there. In 2011, Peterson was released from prison after it was revealed that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation gave misleading information during the case.
Now, Netflix is re-upping the series, with Lestrade showing what life is like for Peterson after his release. There will be three new episodes, providing an expansive look at a two-decade search for truth and justice.
