Well, as mushrooms make their way into foods and beauty products, and the mushroom market heads toward $50 billion in the coming years, it appears that the newest trend is upon us: medicinal mushrooms. Several new brands have started popularizing medicinal mushrooms, which has long been treasured in some Asian cultures for their health-promoting and anti-inflammatory properties. Consumers are increasingly looking to incorporate “functional foods” in their diets, writes Fast Company, and the medicinal mushroom extract market is poised to grow 6.3 percent. Food Navigator found that year-on-year sales for food products that use medicinal mushrooms have risen between 200-800 percent, depending on the type of mushroom. Whole Foods has called medicinal mushrooms a top food trend in 2018.
