Broadway grosses another high record in 2017, with overall box office surpassing $1.5 billion for the first time. The shows driving most of the traffic were premium priced shows like Hamilton, Hello, Dolly! and Springsteen on Broadway. According to The Hollywood Reporter, box office through Dec. 31 — which was a 53-week cycle because of a variance in the 2017 calendar — soared to an astounding $1.67 billion. That is a hike of $270 million from last year’s already high of $1.367 billion, which toppled the previous record of $1.362 billion in 2014. Attendance also broke records this year when it rose to 13.74 million, besting the previous high of 13.25 million in 2016. The average ticket price climbed from $15 to $118. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton led the field, bringing in another $157.8 million for the year with 569,726 admissions. Disney’s The Lion King came in second place, which added $110.3 million to the Broadway coffers. Wicked was third, with $97.1 million.
