Broadway had a particularly bleak year in 2017, but 2018 will open with a few escapist musicals. However, The Guardian writes that even though this spring will bring a full complement of starry casts and prestige projects, there is “very little in the way of experiment or innovation.” There are some popular names hitting the stage though, both in terms of the shows and the stars. Mean Girls, based on the celebrated 2004 Tina Fey film, will be heading to Broadway this year. Fey wrote the book, while her husband Jeff Richmond wrote the music and lyricist Nell Benjamin and director Casey Nicholaw assist. Another popular film-turned-Broadway-musical is Frozen, which was converted by converted by its creators, Jennifer Lee, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, and Robert Lopez, and the director Michael Grandage, into a book musical complete — don’t worry, it has the snowman and reindeer — starring Caissie Levy and Patti Murin. The two other musicals you can check out will be Jack O Brien’s Carousel starring Joshua Henry, Jessie Mueller and Renée Fleming, and Bartlett Sher’s My Fair Lady, starring Lauren Ambrose, Diana Rigg and Norbert Leo Butz. Regarding the plays, most of the excitement surrounds British imports like Tom Stoppard’s Travesties. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child — the play is by Jack Thorne, and is directed by John Tiffany — will probably generate the most buzz. Denzel Washington will appear on stage in The Iceman Cometh. Washington won a Tony Award for Fences.
