Mark Hamill Regrets Critical Comments of 'Last Jedi'

On Tuesday, Mark Hamill said he regretted voicing his criticism of how Luke Skywalker was written for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Hamill said he wishes he had kept his thoughts out of the public. The actor also said that writer-director Rian Johnson made a “great film.”

Hamill tweeted out his regret to his 2.2 million followers. In previous interviews, the famous star said that he did not like the direction Johnson went with his classic Jedi character. Critics of the film did not like Skywalker’s unexpected arc, and angry fans used Hamill’s comments as proof that the movie and the arc were not in line with what Star Wars should be.

During the shooting of the film, Hamill told Johnson that he “pretty much fundamentally disagree(d) with every choice you’ve made for this character.” The actor told this story during an interview with Vanity Fair this May. Hamill said that he was not publicly disagreeing with Johnson in order to create a divide or make people upset, but that he thinks the conversations need to happen for Star Wars to “grow, move forward and stay vital.” The Last Jedi opened on Dec. 14 stateside to near-record breaking numbers.
