General manager is a demanding job. It encompasses everything that has to do with the football team, including travel and logistics, trainers and doctors, players and coaches, and field and video. A GM has to be able to lead in a different way, and deal with players who are 26, 27, 28 years old. Every year, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer puts together an annual future GM list. This year, eight general managers were fired since the last weekend of the last season: in San Francisco, Indianapolis, Washington, Buffalo, Kansas City, Carolina, Cleveland and New York. The top ten list of people who might replace those openings includes Patriots VP of player personnel Nick Caserio, Eagles VP of player personnel Joe Douglas, Seahawks co-director of player personnel Trent Kirchner and Vikings assistant GM George Paton. Others worth mentioning on the list are Falcons assistant GM Scott Pioli and Saints assistant GM Jeff Ireland.
