A new sponsorship deal with a billionaire Bitcoin broker is changing the game for one hockey club in Denmark. The club’s arena will be rebranded to promote cryptocurrencies and its top player (who is the son of one of the owners) will be paid exclusively in Bitcoin. The volatile digital coin has skyrocketed in value over the past few months, and this is the first time a crypto-financial company has sponsored a national premier league professional sports team and it is the first time a pro-athlete has gone all-in on cryptocurrency for their salary. Bitcoin Suisse, a Swiss cryptocurrency broker, will take over the Danish traditional bank Saxo Privatbank as the main sponsor of the hockey team Rungsted Seier Capital (DK) on Dec. 27. Rungsted Seier star athlete Nikolaj Rosenthal, the son of one of the team’s owners, Finn Rosenthal, will then switch from the traditional salary payments of Danish Kroner to being paid exclusively in Bitcoin.
