Cary Grant might be best known as Roger Thornhill, the frantic man in a Kilgour suit being chased down by an airplane in North by Northwest. Given Grant’s acting consistency, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that his style, off the clock, was just as iconic as his film roles. Case and point: Grant is rumored to have been responsible for the now-classic plain denim shirt. In 1958, he wrote a letter to Levi’s PR rep Art Roth asking for a more conservative look to fit his style: “If Levi Strauss ever evolves a line of absolutely plain un-checked, un-metal-threaded, absolutely solid-colored shirts…no matter what the colors: I will rush to the nearest shop,” Grant wrote.
