John Skipper has agreed to a contract extension with Disney to remain president of ESPN through 2021. He has been president since 2012, reports The Big Lead.
Skipper started with the company back in 1997. In 2015, he agreed to a contract extension through 2018.
ESPN has been facing some tough times. Live rights for sports have skyrocketed, reports The Big Lead, and ESPN has lost more than 13 million subscribers since its peak of over 100 million. The company also had a round of layoffs in 2015, letting about 300 people go, and then earlier this year, they laid off another 100. The Big Lead reports that there is another round of layoffs expected before the end of 2017.
However, Disney clearly trusts Skipper to continue leading ESPN through these issues. The Big Lead learned of his contract extension through a person with knowledge of the news. ESPN declined to comment.
