When it comes to cancer, you can always walk for the cure.
But you know what’s more fun? Punching somebody in the face (for the cure).
Introducing the first ever L.A. Haymakers for Hope, a cancer fundraiser that trains would-be pugilists to fight for a cure at the Hollywood Palladium.
That’s right: you train, they match you up with somebody of equal skill. You raise money by selling tickets to your own bout. Everybody wins, cancer loses.
Boxers are placed at one of eight gyms around town. You tell them your weight, age, goals, current exercise routine and whether you’ve ever “touched gloves.”
After three months of training they assess your skills (or lack thereof) and place you in a class for December’s fight — 14 fights, each consisting of three two-minute rounds.
Training involves 3-4 days at the gym (on off days you run). As fight night approaches, you scale back to 2-3 days a week, focusing on technique.
For the first time ever, Haymakers has also partnered with Movember, who’ll be offering shaves and mustache management throughout the months leading up to the battle.
Let’s get it on.
