It’s that time of year: hot, dewy nights and the terrible sleep that comes with them.
So we recently tested out three new sheet companies that promise to keep your bed cool and soporific. All three deliver direct to consumer, which means they’re reasonably priced despite the premium materials that go into them.
Before we set sail, it bares repeating: thread count doesn’t matter that much. You want high-quality cotton and either a sateen or percale weave: the former feels like silk, the latter like soft paper. Both keep you very cool when executed properly. Sateen will wear out faster, while percale gets better with washes (it will develop a bit of a crinkle, but you don’t need to iron it — that’s how it’s supposed to look).
cloudten
New to the scene: cloudten. This made-in-L.A. brand offers both sateen and percale, each of which is made with long-staple Egyptian cotton (longer fiber is stronger and softer). We like the sateen, which feels like cool silk on the hand and remains so all night.
Authenticity 50
The longer the staple, the better. And Authenticity 50 (also local) uses an extra long-staple that’s grown here in California and loomed in the South, making it 100% American made. They use Supima cotton for a soft percale that is thicker than most of its competitors. In fat, it almost feels like a sateen. But it’ll break in nicely. No sweaty nights on these.
Parachute
Local? Yes. They even have a nice little store and one-bedroom hotel on Rose. Parachute has been making comfy, all-natural sheets for a while, but it’s their quilt that you should consider for your bed this summer: a big comforter is too much for this heat. It’s lightweight, and you don’t even need to use a top sheet (so long as you wash it regularly).
