Good enough is the enemy of best. Which is why Bowers & Wilkins has always reached for pure excellence. The British manufacturer of world-renowned audio equipment has drawn the curtain on the latest generation of its 800 Series Diamond speakers and somehow, almost inconceivably, it’s managed to improve upon an almost perfect system — first introduced more than 40 years ago.
The newest iteration of the B&W 800 Series Diamond still features seven models, including the two-way 805 D4 stand mounter, as well as the 804 D4, 803 D4 and 802 D4 floorstanders. There is also the HTM81 D4 and HTM82 D4 center channels, and the flagship 801 D4 floorstander which replaces the existing 800 D3.
For B&W enthusiasts, the lineup might look familiar, but the fourth generation brings a series of new features worth noting, like the composite Biomimetic Suspension system that significantly improves midrange transparency and natural sound. Other improvements can be subtly found throughout the cabinet’s interior, which enhances more aluminum for increased stiffness and quiet, as well as the revised Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top housing for more open sound.
Allowing substance and style to go hand-in hand, B&W revisited the exterior of these speakers to match the premium build of the insides. The 804 D4 and 805 D4 showcase a reverse-wrap cabinet that was first introduced six years ago for the largest floor standing speakers in the series. This increases rigidity while allowing the crossovers to be mounted in the rear of the speaker, where engineers created dedicated space. There are also thicker plywood panels and reinforced aluminum bracings to reduce vibration.
Alongside the Gloss Black, White and Satin Rosenut colorways, you’ll also find the series in a new Satin Walnut finish as well (above). Ranging from $5,500 for the HTM82 D4 center channel to $35,000 for the 801 D4, the entire 800 Series Diamond is now available from select dealers. Thats is, if you’re up for excellence.
