This week, The James Brand and Topo Designs — two of the most respected names in the outdoors and design — announced their second partnership on a Utility Capsule that embraces style, function and respect for everyday carry.
For those unfamiliar with the brands, a bit of context: based in Oregon, The James Brand has a short but celebrated history designing knives (some of which we’ve reviewed) while Topo Designs crafts backpacks, bags and apparel for every conceivable adventure. After previously partnering on a three-piece EDC capsule, the two labels have once again joined forces to deliver a co-branded capsule of limited-edition goods that embrace clean lines, premium materials and seamless functionality.
The James Brand kicks off the collaboration with the Redstone, a pocket knife that’s surprisingly small but extremely capable. Beyond its 2.5-inch blade and sliding locker, you’ll notice the Redstone’s divided “island” scales inspired by climbing holds that deliver solid grip and ambidextrous ergonomics. Adorned with subtle Topo branding, the Sandvik 12C27 steel blade is juxtaposed by red scales to supply rich, eye-catching contrast.
For its part, Topo Designs built a variant of its Mini Shoulder Bag, a cross-body bag built from 100% climate-neutral X-Pac nylon and recycled 210D nylon. Featuring water-resistant, AquaGuard zippers and two storage pockets (one of which you should use to store the Redstone), the bag also comes with hook-and-loop straps that attach to your pack or bike rack. In addition to receiving a logo patch with branding from both labels, this version adopts red-and-black zipper pulls that contrast its otherwise black colorway.
Available now in limited numbers, you can find the Utility Capsule on both companies’ websites priced only slightly higher ($36 to be exact) than the regular items sold separately. There’s never been a better time to upgrade your everyday carry ensemble.
