The advertisement is pretty straightforward: “If you have the passion for writing, journalistic integrity, good business acumen, and want the opportunity to pursue the noble profession of being a newspaper publisher …this essay contest is for you.” The Hardwick Gazette, a Vermont newspaper, has launched an essay contest, whose winner gets to own the newspaper itself. Essayists have to write, in 400 words or less, why they’d make a great publisher and show their “vision for owning a paid weekly newspaper in the new millennium.” Entry fee is $175, so it’s not for the average kid off the street.
