Winning isn’t everything.
If you don’t want to take our word for it, or your mother’s, we hope you’ll take Carroll Shelby’s.
Even though none of the cars (a model you may have heard of: the Cobra) the Shelby American team entered in the Sebring 12-Hour Grand Prix of Endurance in ‘63 finished in the top 10 — those spots went to Ferrari, Jaguar and Porsche — they’re still considered among the most significant vintage race cars in history.
So much so that Superformance and Shelby American are producing a run of 15 Sebring Edition Cobras configured to the original specs the lovable losers were endowed with back in 1963. In addition to being offered with four paint jobs meant to replicate the look of the Shelby entries, the Cobra tributes have a steel tube frame chassis and suspension, aluminum radiator, disc brakes, a third hood latch and vinyl seats with carpeted backs.
Gotta love those carpeted backs.
“Any race car is difficult to replicate exactly since it changes from race to race,” Superformance CEO Lance Stander told Robb Report. “There were a lot of details that we had to get right — from the green-glowing tachometer to the cutback door on the driver’s side to the dashboard switches from a B25 bomber — and we did.”
Priced from $160,000 to $195,000, two of the models will be made from aluminum, the rest from fiberglass.
Either way, hubba, hubba.
