It's also much cuter, by a long shot

As anyone who’s visited a maternity ward knows, happy mistakes come in all shapes and sizes.

The latest from Caterham Cars just happens to be larger than most: 1,190 pounds, eight ounces.

The result of the company’s search for an easy way to upgrade the power of an earlier model, the Caterham Seven 310 comes standard with a 1.6-liter Ford Sigma Ti-VCT engine that gives it a 0-60 time of five seconds, top speed of 127 MPH and 250 BHP-per-ton power-to-weight ratio.

Once testers experienced what the 310’s extra horsepower was like during a test run, Caterham execs quickly decided their “unplanned baby” needed to be brought to market on its own.

“Within a mile I knew this was too good to be just a simple upgrade option,” Caterham CTO Simon Lambert told Car Magazine. “It felt like a complete model in its own right, and immediately reminded me of the R300, arguably our best-balanced model.”

The lightweight 310 — which can be outfitted with upgrades like LED headlamps, an improved suspension, six-speed gearbox, carbon fiber dashboard and removable leather roof — is priced at $32,700 fully-assembled and Caterham plans to begin filling orders in early 2017.

The stork is gonna need a bigger bundle.
