If you had to choose the star of 1968’s Bullit, it’d surely be Steve McQueen. But the highland green Ford Mustang Fastback he drove in the film’s infamous car chase is a close second.
That car — one of two used in the film, and which recently fetched headlines after it was found in a Mexico junkyard— has drawn its fair share of flattery over the years, flattery that’s now shifted into its most sincere form: imitation.
Originally sold in 1968 with a standard 390 V8 under the hood, this Bullitt replica model still has original components like a four-speed manual transmission and a Holley four-barrel carburettor but has been given a heavy-duty suspension and a blank front grille to match its inspiration.
With added touches like tinted windows, bucket seats and a push button AM/FM radio, the replica ‘Stang will draw lots of attention when it hits the block for Mecum Auctions next month.
If you register to bid, keep an eye out for a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T to complete the tribute set.
