After attending a screening of Angry Birds, Australia-based custom motorcycle builder Wenley Andrews decided to pay tribute to the 2016 blockbuster with a one-off bike of the same name.
Actually that’s not true at all.
The true origin story of the Angry Bird motorbike that Andrews fashioned out of a 2004 Honda CBR954RR actually involves a long-lost love affair: between a streetfighter and a café racer.
More than a decade ago, Andrews began gathering parts for a special streetfigther he wanted to build, but was forced to put that project on hold when he got bogged down working on a fleet of café racers.
When the dust finally settled 10 years later, Andrews decided to give the project a second look. “I retrieved the parts I had gathered after all these years from under my parent’s house, brushed off all the cobwebs and they were good as new,” Andrews said.
He took those parts — including retro front forks and a swing arm from a Honda VFR — and assembled them with some new ones using the knowledge he’d gained in his café racer days. The result is a bespoke build with fat tires, a shotgun-style exhaust and a slate of other custom touches that make the bike look more fun than a flock of angry birds, much less one of ’em.
