The wage gap for women, which has typically been reported as 80 cents to every dollar a man earns, is actually much greater when measured over long term periods of time, Bloomberg reports.
An Institute for Women’s Policy Research study revealed that, when measured over a 15 year span of time, women’s earning were just 49% of that of their male counterpart- a 51% wage gap.
The study also showed that women who took a year off of work during the 15-year study period, earned 39% less than women who continued to work for the entire 15 years. The IWPR’s president Heidi Hartmann explains: “We have actually been underestimating the extent of pay inequality in the labor market.”
